The last day

Today was my last day, I’m taking off tomorrow for my wedding on Saturday. Today I mostly stayed around the office. I made sure I got all my paperwork straightened out. For lunch some of the guys took me out to eat, I said goodbye to everyone. It has been a good experience for me. It was stressful and physically demanding but overall I enjoyed it. Before I left I was told if I ever needed a Job to just give them a call. It felt good to hear that.

Cleaning up the office

The last few days I have just been cleaning up the office and their storage building. I’m almost finished Jim wanted to make sure he got any information that I have pertaining to any of the projects I worked on. The majority of it was getting paperwork done for Berea College.

Pulling lots of wire

August 8 – 10

This week I have pulled more wire then I have ever pulled in my entire life. I’m kind of getting tired of it a little but we are done with most of the wire pulls at LMU. Maybe I’ll get to be at the
office next week!

More Wire pulls

Today Jim told me that I would be doing mostly wire pulls and stuff around the office sense I would be done in a couple of weeks. He didn’t want to put my on any more big projects. So today I ran around with the wire guys and pulled a few cables in a couple of different buildings.

Wireless Server Fixed

Today we worked on the wireless server again. After struggling today, time after time we finally figured out what the problem was. There was a setting in the master server that was turned on and the client server also had it turned on. Once we turned it off it came up like a charm. After that issue was fixed I went with the wire guys to another building to help them pull some wire.

Wireless setup

This week we started setting up the wireless server for LMU. Today we got the server setup but there was an issue where it wouldn’t communicate with the master server. We worked most of the day trying to figure out the problem but we still aren’t sure what is wrong. We’ll be looking at it again tomorrow.

LMU Switches

Well today we finally finished installing switches and patching them through on the patch panel. We ran into some issues bringing up the switches and then bringing up the building. The problems with the links between the switches were just fiber mismatches. When this happens the send and receive strands of the fiber have gotten crossed so that it is trying to send information on the receive strand and receive information on the send strand. Flipping the links corrects this issue. The link between the core router and the building is a 10GB Redundant fiber link. There were some issues with the configuration of the core router and the switches on the other end of that link.

Finished Hanging AP’s

For the last few days I have been hanging AP’s. Today I finally finished and have moved on to installing the switches. They wanted me to wait until they could get someone down there to help me because it is really a two person job. hanging fifty switches should take a few days.

LMU Wireless

Well I didn’t get to go back to Ephram to help with the firewall and router upgrade today. Instead I was sent to LMU to hang some AP’s. While I had projects before that were assigned to me this one was more exciting because they let me go by myself to install them and I didn’t need help from anyone. It was a nice because I felt like I was in charge of something. The installation process was fairly simple basically all I did was lift a tile on the drop ceiling, attaching a bracket, and clipping the AP to the bracket. The network wire was run to most of them so all I had to do was attach the network wire and I was done. It became a tedious job because I had to work around other people. I was installing while painters were painting, carpet was being installed, and electricians were at work.

Ephram McDowell

Well today I didn’t get to go to LMU instead I went to Ephram McDowell hospital in Danville with Zach and Nick to install a new software firewall. We installed it on a dedicated server. There was a lot of preparation. We had to make sure everything was ready for the old server to go down and the new one to go up with as little down time as possible. To prepare, we had to fully set up the firewall and run all of the necessary wire so that we would only have to unplug the wire from the old firewall into the new firewall. Once we had everything ready, we had to wait for the scheduled time to take it down. We wanted to have a scheduled time so that there would be very little network usage and the down time would effect as few people as possible. During the waiting time, Zach showed me how he configured the router we were installing by explaining the configuration file line by line. Alot of what he was saying was over my head. Before we installed the router, we installed the firewall to make sure it was working. Once the firewall was installed, we tested all of the programs that the firewall was supposed to allow traffic for. We found that the firewall wasn’t working properly. We brought the old firewall back in and Zach and I installed the router as Nick debugged the firewall. We went through the same process of setup with the router as we did with the firewall, getting everything setup until all we had to do was switch wires. When we brought the router up, we tried to ping www.google.com to make sure we were getting out to the internet. The ping failed and we had to bring the old router back online. After several attempts of trying to fix both the firewall and the router, we called it a day and scheduled the next day to come back and finish the job.
